According to Gartner, "For asset-intensive industries, operations and maintenance are the most impactful departments to the overall business process, and must work together to ensure the best possible overall organization performance. Operations has primary responsibility to produce or ship a product through management of inventories and optimal operation of equipment, ensuring targets such as sales, customer delivery and service are met. Maintenance departments have the primary responsibility to provide operators with equipment that will consistently meet their requirements, including throughput, product quality and safety. However, these groups are measured separately and focus on different tasks.
