• Instrument impulse line problem found at a fertilizer manufacturer

    On February 15th, the GE SmartSignal solution detected a decrease in seal oil/reference gas differential pressure on a centrifugal compressor at a ferilizer manufacturer. The differential pressure dropped from 2.0 to as low as 1.8 barg during a period of -20°C ambient temperatures. GE’s Industrial Performance & Reliability Center (IPRC) reported these changes to the customer during the weekly call and report.

What did GE's analytics software find?

What was the underlyinc cause?

After investigation, the site found the instrument impulse line was missing insulation, causing the transmitter to act sluggishly.

 

What was the value to the customer?

After being notified by the IPRC, the site was able to insulate the line, and the differential pressure returned to the model prediction. The GE SmartSignal software was able to identify a problem long before the site's low level alarm of 1.6 barg was reached. Low seal oil differential pressure could have tripped the compressor, causing significant production losses.
