TATA Power supplies power to some of the world’s most densely populated cities and industrial locations. This challenges the company to balance conflicting demands – the need for power and the need for cost efficiency.
India’s largest integrated power company, TATA Power, operates throughout the power value chain – from power generation (thermal hydro, solar and wind), to transmission, distribution and trading. Together with its subsidiaries and jointly-controlled entities, TATA Power has an installed gross generation capacity of 10,549 MW, with 33% coming from clean energy sources. It serves 2.6 million customers in India, with an international presence in Indonesia, Singapore, Georgia, Norway and Bhutan.
Supplying power to some of the world’s most densely populated cities and industrial locations challenged TATA Power to balance conflicting demands – the need for power and the need for cost efficiency. A desire to shift from a compliance-driven to data-driven organization inspired TATA Power leadership to create Param Sankalp, a comprehensive transformation program designed to reduce costs while improving operational reliability and efficiency across the company.
To help transform its operations, TATA Power engaged GE Digital to deliver its Predix Asset Performance Management (APM) solution. Using advanced analytics and digitized processes, APM is designed to drive plant uptime and operational efficiency, increasing availability, on average, from 10-20% while reducing O&M costs.
APM will enable the company to have an asset-centric view of its data and build a structured methodology for maintenance optimization across its chain of operations. Implemented across 15 sites, with primary focus on 6,000 mission-critical assets supporting 7.5 GW of installed capacity, APM software also allows flexible configuration options that cater to TATA Power’s specific needs. For example, the company's in-house equipment classification system was configured in the APM system within a matter of days.
