The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is America's largest state power organization, with 16 generating facilities and more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines.
NYPA President and CEO Gil Quiniones is realizing NYPA’s mission to provide low cost, reliable power to their customers. The longer-term goal for NYPA is to be the nation’s first end to end digital utility.
To achieve this bold goal the NYPA operation center needed to improve failure prediction and optimize their maintenance processes.
NYPA partnered with GE Digital to build the Integrated Smart Operations Center (iSOC). This award-winning, state-of-the art facility, located in NYPA’s White Plains office, is enabling an innovate energy infrastructure. iSOC uses GE Digital’s predictive analytics software (APM) to forecast and prevent equipment failures and significant outages.
In the first years of operation, the iSOC has predicted numerous conditions in equipment that, if undiscovered, could have led to costly forced outages and avoided millions in costs. Online remote monitoring of power plants, sub-stations and power lines is increasing plant efficiency and productivity, reducing unplanned downtime, lowering maintenance costs and minimizing operational risks.
The technology is also helping NYPA to make continued progress in waging Governor Andrew Cuomo’s battle against climate change in New York.
