Proficy HMI / SCADA
Mekorot, Israel’s National Water Company, provides 70% of all water and 80% of the drinking water for the country.
Challenges
Rising production costs and growing demand
In an arid climate such as Israel, water is an especially valuable commodity; frequent droughts and a dramatic increase in demand have made securing a reliable source of high-quality water a national priority. Mekorot sought to reduce production costs through improved operational efficiency and tighter process control.
Solutions
Powerful redundancy capabilities with HMI/SCADA
Mekorot chose Proficy HMI/SCADA’s high performance automation solutions to control and monitor operations at its central filtration center to meet critical customer needs. The control system features GE’s PACSystems high availability solution, which provides true redundancy and enables full backup of the controller. The GE control and monitoring system has identical modules that work independently and full backup to help Mekorot ensure continuous and reliable operations. The operations support system and programming tools enable real-time decision-making.
Furthermore, Mekorot can monitor and manage its central filtration plant from a single control center using Proficy HMI/SCADA. Dozens of monitors visualize and track the plant’s systems with minimal intervention from operational staff, dramatically increasing the plant’s operational efficiency and minimizing costs.
Results
Efficient around the clock operations
With GE Ditial’s solution, Mekorot met its goals of achieving high availability, with the water plant running 24/7, even during system upgrades. It increased its operational efficiency through a more connected plant, which can run with fewer shifts and personnel than similar-sized operations. It also reduced costs with fewer unplanned downtime events and greater operational efficiency, as well as continuous operations due to true system redundancy.
