Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS)

Finnish transmission grid operator Fingrid is leveraging GE Vernova’s Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS) to help enable orchestration of renewables at scale. This partnership provides Fingrid with access to modern, more flexible capabilities that help automate grid balancing and control processes and led to the rapid development of Load Frequency Control (LFC).

We need to automize the whole balancing process and we need software to be able to push the limits and operate the grid nearer to real time."

Tuomas Mattila - Expert, Balancing Markets at Fingrid

Tuomas continues “It's not possible anymore to do it manually so we need to automize the whole balancing process and that's one good example where software has a key role.”

Load Frequency Control continually monitors frequency changes caused by various types of power fluctuations. When the solution detects a fluctuation, it quickly determines how to best respond and automatically adjusts generator frequency back to its nominal value. LFC addresses the requirements established by ENTSO-e System Operation Guideline (SOGL) and market guidelines like the Electricity Balancing Guideline (EBGL). It can also be integrated with the Platform for the International Coordination of Automated Frequency Restoration and Stable System Operation (PICASSO).

By automating the control process with Load Frequency Control, Fingrid is working to better protect its transmission grid and ensure a steady flow of power to customers.

“GridOS is our base platform and what it brings is really the ability to accelerate development of apps,” said Andrew Gilles, Chief Technology Officer for Grid Software at GE Vernova. "And it does this," Gilles continues, "because it already provides a modular architecture...that allows a utility to then access the data and use it in their own ways."
