SPE is a 2020 Digital Innovator Award winner.

SPE serves more than 10 million customers in Algeria. Their investments in remote monitoring and commitment to digital transformation have led to best-in-class maintenance cost management.

Background

SPE (La Société Algérienne de Production de l’Electricité) is Algeria’s national power generation company with an installed base of 15 GW (22 GW in 2022). It is a fully-owned subsidiary of Sonelgaz, a state-owned utility in charge of electricity and natural gas distribution in Algeria.

In 2020, SPE had to ensure the continuation of electricity for the city of Algiers, while shifting its operations remotely.

Enter Mohamed Charif, Monitoring and Diagnostics Analyst, SPE.  Using only a laptop, Charif can access data from 10,000 sensors across three power plants. By applying predictive analytics to this data, Mohamed Charif can understand potential maintenance issues, and schedule repairs.

Once a maintenance alert is created, Mohamed Sebar, Services Leader Sonelgaz SPE and his team go to work. Using predictive data alerts from the APM system, Sebar is able to fix critical power generation equipment, before it breaks down.

With the efforts of industrial superheroes like Mohamed Charif and Mohamed Sebar, SPE is able to maintain adequate power supply to the country.

Summary

Currently, GE Digital monitors three of SPE’s power plants from a Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) center in the capital city of Algiers, using Asset Performance Management (APM) and Operations Performance Management (OPM) software.

This digital infrastructure uses Digital Twin technology to observe reactions to potential changes in operations and helps SPE ensure the continuation of electricity supply. By the end of 2022, a total of 12 sites will be connected to the M&D center. Mr. Lezhari, CEO of SPE, talked about SPE’s digitization journey and the role of predictive maintenance in reducing operating costs and improving performance.
