Upgrade or Update GE Digital APM to V4.3.0.6.0

Upgrading or updating and configuring GE Digital APM includes completing multiple steps, which are outlined in the tables in this section. This section of the documentation provides all the information that you need to upgrade or update and configure the basic system architecture toV4.3.0.6.0.

After you have completed these steps, you will need to perform additional steps required to upgrade any modules that were deployed on your previous version. If you have purchased additional modules for use with GE Digital APM, then you will also need to consult the first-time deployment documentation for each of those modules and features.

The person responsible for completing each task may vary within in your organization. We recommend, however, that the steps be performed in relatively the same order in which they are listed in the table.

Update from version V4.3.0.0.0 through V4.3.0.5.0

If your current version is GE Digital APM V4.3.0.0.0 through V4.3.0.5.0, then updating the basic system architecture to V4.3.0.6.0 requires only that you complete the steps that are outlined in the table in this section.

Notes
1Create a backup of your database, and create a backup of any configuration files that exist in your pre-updated system. This step is not mandatory, but is recommended by GE Digital APM. Updates may include changes to configuration files and database elements. If any problems occur during the update, the configuration files and database can be restored to their original states from the backup copies.
2 Update the GE Digital APM Server and Add Ons software on the GE Digital APM Server(s).This step is required. This procedure includes updating your data sources for V4.3.0.6.0.
3Via Command Prompt, activate the license for V4.3.0.6.0.This step is required. This license increases security through advanced encryption and enables foundation-level GE Digital APM features. For more information, consult the Activate Licenses documentation.
4If you want to activate non-English translations in GE Digital APM, then deploy translations. This step is required only if you are deploying translations for the first time or if you want to utilize and redeploy updated translations.
5As needed, configure one of the virtual machine to execute all the scheduled jobs. This step is required only if you have deployed GE Digital APM in a clustered environment and you want to dedicate a virtual machine to run all the scheduled jobs.
6As needed, deploy the GE Digital APM mobile application on mobile devices. This step is required only if you are deploying the GE Digital APM mobile application on mobile devices.

Upgrade from a version prior to version V4.3.0.0.0

If your current version is a version prior to GE Digital APM V4.3.0.0.0, then updating the basic system architecture to V4.3.0.6.0 requires only that you complete the steps that are outlined in the table in this section.

Notes
1Ensure that your system meets the hardware and software requirements for the basic GE Digital APM system architecture. This step is required.
2

On the server machine on which you will install Elastic Search, download and install Java V1.8.0_73 or higher, then set an environment variable, for the system, for JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_73, and then, echo %JAVA_HOME% to verify.

Note:

  • The JAVA HOME variable should match the Java version that you installed, and its installation location.
  • For additional information regarding Java support for Elastic Search, consult the official Elastic Search documentation.

This step is required. Ensure that you complete this step on the machine on which you will install Elastic Search.

Note:

For optimum system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that you install Elastic Search on its own, dedicated server that contains no GE Digital APM components. If you utilize this deployment, you will need to download Elastic Search V5.3.0 from the official website, and consult the documentation on that website for configuration instructions.

-or-

You can install Elastic Search on a GE Digital APM Server. If you utilize this deployment, to improve system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that the server machine have a minimum of 24 GB RAM.

Important: Any time you upgrade Java to a new version, you will need to reset this environmental variable.
3Ensure that all existing GE Digital APM Security Users have been assigned time zones. Refer to your pre-upgraded system’s documentation for information on managing GE Digital APM Security Users. This step is required. If there are GE Digital APM Security Users to whom time zones have not been assigned, a failure will occur during the database upgrade process.
4If you intend to upgrade the Production Loss Analysis (PLA) module from a starting version prior to V3.6.0.0.0, then import the required baseline rules.
Important:

This step is required only if you intend to upgrade the Production Loss Analysis (PLA) module from a starting version prior to Meridium Enterprise APM V3.6.0.0.0. If you intend to upgrade PLA in this manner, this procedure must be completed before upgrading the GE Digital APM Server and Add Ons software on the GE Digital APM Server(s). This procedure is part of the upgrade Production Loss Analysis workflow.

5

Create a backup of any configuration files that exist in your pre-upgraded system which you may want to retain post-upgrade.

This step is required only if you want to retain customizations that you have made to your existing configuration files.

6

Upgrade the GE Digital APM Server and Add Ons software on the GE Digital APM Server(s).

This step is required. Consult the documentation on Redis for information about its incorporation into server configurations.
7

Install Elastic Search on its own, dedicated server.

-or-

On the GE Digital APM Server on which you want to install Elastic Search, run the installer in modify mode. In that procedure, select the Modify check box, and then ensure that the Meridium APM Application Server and Elastic Search check boxes are selected.

This step is required only if you did not install Elastic Search on the GE Digital APM Server in the previous step. You must install Elastic Search on a server in your environment.

Note:

You must install Elastic Search on a server in your environment.

For optimum system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that you install Elastic Search on its own, dedicated server that contains no GE Digital APM components.

You can install Elastic Search on a GE Digital APM Server by running the installer in modify mode. If you utilize this deployment, to improve system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that the server machine have a minimum of 24 GB RAM.
