Deploy GE Digital APM for the First Time

The following table outlines the steps that you must complete to deploy and configure GE Digital APM for the first time. After you have completed these steps, you will need to perform additional steps to configure the modules that you have purchased.

These tasks may be completed by multiple people in your organization. We recommend, however, that the tasks be completed in the order in which they are listed. All steps are required unless otherwise noted.

Ensure that your system meets the hardware and software requirements for the basic GE Digital APM system architecture.

Review how the operating systems are configured in the GE Digital APM testing environment. To configure your system to match the GE Digital APM testing environment, on the machine that will serve as the GE Digital APM Server, you need to:

This step is required. It is recommended that you configure your system to match the configuration used in the GE Digital APM testing environment.

On the server machine on which you will install Elastic Search, download and install Java V1.8.0_73 or higher, then set an environment variable, for the system, for JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_73, and then, echo %JAVA_HOME% to verify.

Note:

  • The JAVA HOME variable should match the Java version that you installed, and its installation location.
  • For additional information regarding Java support for Elastic Search, consult the official Elastic Search documentation.

This step is required. Ensure that you complete this step on the machine on which you will install Elastic Search.

Note:

For optimum system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that you install Elastic Search on its own, dedicated server that contains no GE Digital APM components.

You can install Elastic Search on the GE Digital APM Server at the same time that you install the GE Digital APM Server Software and Add-ons software. If you utilize this deployment, to improve system performance, GE Digital APM recommends that the server machine have a minimum of 24 GB RAM.

Important: Any time you upgrade Java to a new version, you will need to reset this environmental variable.

Install the GE Digital APM Server and Add-ons software on each machine that will serve as a GE Digital APM Server.This step is required. Consult the documentation on Redis for information about its incorporation into server configurations.
5If you did not install Elastic Search on the GE Digital APM Server in the previous step, install Elastic Search on a dedicated server.This step is required only if you did not install Elastic Search on the GE Digital APM Server. You must install Elastic Search on a server in your environment.

Deploy the GE Digital APM Database Server, which includes creating and configuring your GE Digital APM database.

Deploy the GE Digital APM SQL Server Report Server.

Create Security User records for the individuals who will need to log in to GE Digital APM applications.

Activate licensed modules and products .

If you want to use non-English translations in GE Digital APM, deploy translations.

This step is required only if you want to deploy translations.
11As needed, configure one of the virtual machine to execute all the scheduled jobs. This step is required only if you have deployed the GE Digital APM in a clustered environment and you want to dedicate a virtual machine to run all the scheduled jobs.
12As needed, deploy the GE Digital APM mobile application on mobile devices.This step is required only if you are deploying the GE Digital APM mobile application on mobile devices.
13As needed, enable Same Sign-On for on-site or off-site authentication.This step is required only if you are enabling Same Sign-On.
