System Architecture

The following image shows how the additional components should be incorporated into the basic GE Digital APM system architecture to support this module.

Deploying AMS Analytics

After you have installed and configured the basic GE Digital APM system architecture, you will need to perform some configuration steps specifically for AMS Analytics.

Supported Features in APM Now

This GE Digital APM is not available in the APM Now environment.

AMS Analytics Data Model

The following diagram shows how the families used by AMS Analytics are related to one another.

Note: In the diagram, boxes represent entity families and arrows represent relationship families that are configured in the baseline database. You can determine the direction of the each relationship definition from the direction of the arrow head: the box from which the arrow originates is the predecessor, and the box to which the arrow head points is the successor.

AMS Analytics leverages the fundamental GE Digital APM entity and relationship family infrastructure for storing data that you transfer from an AMS Analytics data source to the GE Digital APM database. AMS Asset Data Source records are used to store connection information that the GE Digital APM system uses to access an AMS Analytics data source and then create records that correspond to the records that exist in the AMS Analytics data source. When data is transferred to the GE Digital APM database from an AMS Analytics data source, one or more records in the following families will be created, depending up on the data that exist in the AMS Analytics data source:

  • AMS Asset
  • AMS Asset Alert
  • AMS Asset Event
  • AMS Asset Folder

Each record that is created stores the values that exist in the corresponding entities in the AMS Analytics data source. This documentation assumes that you are familiar with the data that is stored in the AMS Analytics data sources. When the records are created, appropriate links are also added between AMS Asset records and the related AMS Asset Alert, AMS Asset Event, and AMS Asset Folder records.

In addition to the families described above, the following families are also used within AMS Analytics:

  • Equipment and Functional Location: Records that represent the equipment and locations in your facility. Each of these records must be linked to its corresponding AMS Asset record.

Note: If you are not using Equipment and Functional Location records and you want to view AMS Asset Folders and AMS Assets in a hierarchy, you can modify theapplication-wide sset Hierarchy configuration to include the AMS Asset Folder and AMS Asset families.
  • AMS Asset Recommendation : After transferring data to GE Digital APM, you can create AMS Asset Recommendation records to store information about recommendations for actions that should be taken based upon the transferred data. As with any performance recommendation, you can also create a work request in a configured EAM system when the recommendation is saved.

AMS Analytics Security Groups and Roles

The following table lists the baseline Security Groups available for users within this module, as well as the baseline Roles to which those Security Groups are assigned.

Important: Assigning a Security User to a Role grants that user the privileges associated with all of the Security Groups that are assigned to that Role. To avoid granting a Security User unintended privileges, before assigning a Security User to a Role, be sure to review all of the privileges associated with the Security Groups assigned to that Role. Also, be aware that additional Roles, as well as Security Groups assigned to existing Roles, can be added via Security Manager.

About Site Filtering in AMS Analytics

In AMS Analytics, users will see only data related to AMS Assets assigned to their site(s) or that are global records.

Tip: For more information, refer to the Site Filtering section of the documentation.

Example

Consider an organization that has three sites, Site X, Site Y, and Site Z. The following AMS Asset records exist:

  • AMS Asset 1: Assigned to Site X
  • AMS Asset 2: Assigned to Site Y
  • AMS Asset 3: Assigned to Site Z
  • AMS Asset 4: No site assigned (global record)

Each of these AMS Assets has related AMS Asset Alerts and AMS Asset Events.

Scenario 1: User assigned to only Site X

When this user views the AMS Analytics Overview page, he or she can view AMS Asset 1 and AMS Asset 4, as well as any associated alerts and events. AMS Asset 2 and 3, and their related alerts and events, are not visible.

Scenario 2: User assigned to both Site X and Site Y

When this user views the AMS Analytics Overview page, he or she can view AMS Asset 1, 2, and 4, as well as any associated alerts and events. AMS Asset 3, and its related alerts and events, is not visible.

Scenario 3: Super User

When this user views the AMS Analytics Overview page, he or she can view AMS Asset 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as any associated alerts and events.

About Site Filtering in AMS Asset Data Sources

The AMS Asset Data Source family employs the GE Digital APM Site Filter Control. When an AMS Asset Data Source record is initially created, it is assigned as Global. If the record is not reassigned to a specific site, the user will always see the global record.

Tip: For more information, refer to the Site Filtering section of the documentation.
Note: Only a Super User can modify the site assigned to an AMS Asset Data Source record.

The AMS Asset Data Source record is used to facilitate the transfer of records from your Emerson AMS system into GE Digital APM. Specifically, AMS Asset records (Tags) and AMS health records (that is, AMS Alerts, AMS Events, etc.) are transferred into GE Digital APM. AMS Asset records associated with the data source are assigned to Global when they are initially transferred into GE Digital APM.

As recommend, each AMS Asset record record should be linked to an Equipment or Functional Location record. Once an AMS Asset record is linked to an Equipment or Functional Location record, it will inherit the site assignment of the Equipment or Functional Location record. Therefore, if an AMS Asset is linked to an Equipment or Functional Location record assigned to a different site then the AMS Asset Data Source record, then the AMS Asset record can have a different site assignment then the AMS Asset Data Source record to which it is associated. In other words, the site assigned to the Equipment or Functional Location record takes precedent over the site assigned to the AMS Asset Data Source record.

Important: When linking an AMS Asset record, the record can be linked only to Equipment and Functional Locations records assigned to a site to which a user has permissions. For instance, if a user has access to Site X only, then only Equipment and Functional Locations from Site X, and Global records, are available to the user for linking.

Additionally, all linked AMS health records will inherit the site assignment of the linked Equipment or Functional Location record. However, only new health indicator records associated with the AMS Asset Data Source record will be assigned the site from the linked Equipment or Functional Location record. Data already committed to the GE Digital APM Database will not be updated.

Consider an organization that has three sites, Site X, Site Y, Site Z. The following AMS Asset Data Source records exist:
  • AMS Data Source 1: Assigned to Site X
  • AMS Data Source 2: Assigned to Site Y
  • AMS Data Source 3: Assigned to Site Z
  • AMS Data Source 4: Assigned as Global

Scenario 1: User assigned to only Site X

When this user accesses the AMS Asset Data Sources page, he or she will see only AMS Data Source 1 and AMS Data Source 4. While he or she is able to view AMS Asset Data Source records with site assignment X, the user will not be permitted to modify or change the site assignment.

In addition, the user will be able to access any AMS Asset records from AMS Asset Data Source records 2 and 3 that are yet to be linked to an Equipment or Functional Location record, because all AMS Asset records are transferred into GE Digital APM as Global records.

Finally, the user will only be allowed to link AMS Asset records to Equipment and Functional Location that are assigned to Site X or that are assigned as Global.

Scenario 2: User assigned to both Site X and Site Y.

When this user accesses the AMS Asset Data Source page, he or she will only see AMS Data Sources 1, 2, and 4. While he or she is able to view AMS Asset Data Source records with site assignment X and Y, the user will not be permitted to modify the site assignment of the AMS Data Source.

In addition, the user will be able to access any AMS Asset records from AMS Data Source 3 that have yet to be linked to an Equipment or Functional Location record, because all AMS Asset records are transferred into GE Digital APM as Global records.

Finally, the user will only be allowed to link AMS Asset records to Equipment and Functional Location that are assigned to Site X, Site Y, or that are assigned as Global.

Scenario 3: Super User

When this super user accesses the AMS Asset Data Source page, he or she will see all AMS Data Source 1, 2, 3, and 4. In addition to accessing the data source records, the super user has privileges to reassign the AMS Asset Data Source record to a different site.

If linking AMS Asset records to Equipment and Functional Locations, the super user can link tags and assets from all sites (Site X, Site Y, Site Z, and Global records).
