Specify Consumption of BOM Items for an Operation

About this task

Consuming a lot represents the process of utilizing a BOM item within an operation. As an operator, you can access the BOM section in the Work Queue application to consume the lots while executing an operation.
You can consume serial/lot in the following two methods as needed:
  • Consume exact serial/lot number: If you already know the exact serial/lot that needs to be consumed, you can enter that serial/lot and the quantity to consume, and then consume.
Note: If the entered serial/lot is invalid for any reason, you will be notified with an appropriate error message, as described in Error Messages while Consuming an Exact Serial/Lot Number.
  • Search for a lot and consume (Partial search): If you do not know the exact serial/lot that needs to be consumed and/or if you want to consume from multiple serials/lots of a same BOM item, you can search for the complete or the partial name of the serial/lot. The serials/lots that match the searched string will be listed, and you can enter the quantity to consume for all those serials/lots as needed, and then consume.
Note: If the lot number that you have entered does not exist in Plant Applications, a window appears, asking you whether you want to create the lot number. If that happens, enter the quantity to create and consume, and then select Yes. For more information, refer to Create a Lot.
Note: If the entered serial/lot is invalid for any reason, you will be notified with an appropriate error message, as described in Error Messages while Consuming Serial/Lot using Partial Search.

Before you begin

  • To consume a lot, you must have the Consume raw material permission. If you do not have the permission to perform this task, request your administrator to provide the permission using Security. For more information, refer to Create a Role.
  • If clocking on is required for the operation, clock on the serials/lots for which you want to specify BOM consumption.

Procedure

  1. Log in to Plant Applications Web Client.
  2. Select Work Queue.
  3. Access the operation for which you want to specify the consumption of BOM items.
The page for the operation appears, displaying the Documents section. On the BOM tab, a number appears, which indicates the total number of mandatory BOM items to be consumed for all the serials/lots that you have clocked on for the operation.
  4. Select BOM.
    A list of serials/lots appears.
  5. Select the serial/lot for which you want to specify the consumption of BOM items.
A list of BOM items for the selected serial/lot appears in the workspace.
  6. Select the BOM item whose consumption you want to specify.
A window appears, providing information on the required quantity of the BOM item, whether consuming the BOM item is mandatory to complete the operation, and the quantity that has been already consumed for the serial/lot.
  7. Search for a Serial/Lot#:
    • If you already know the exact serial/lot that needs to be consumed, in the SCAN SERIAL/LOT# box, enter the exact serial/lot of the BOM item.
    • If you do not know the exact serial/lot that needs to be consumed and/or if you want to consume from multiple serials/lots of a same BOM item, in the SCAN SERIAL/LOT#, enter the complete or the partial Serial/Lot# of the BOM item that you want to consume, and then select .
Note: If the entered serial/lot is invalid for any reason, you will be notified with an appropriate error message, as described in Error Messages while Consuming Serial/Lot using Partial Search.
    • If you want to search for a serial/lot by using a barcode, select , and then scan the barcode of the serial/lot associated with the BOM item. Use your device's front camera only for Barcode/QR code scanning. The application supports one-dimensional (Aztec, Data Matrix, MaxiCode, PDF417, UPC-A, UPC-E, UPC/EAN Extension) and two-dimensional (Codabar, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, EAN-8, EAN-13, ITF, QR Code, RSS 14, RSS Expanded) types of standard codes. In iPad, you can use only in the Safari browser.
      Note:
      • The search result of the SCAN SERIAL/LOT# box is not case-sensitive.
      • For an exact serial/lot search and consumption, the Available: <quantity_of_parts> message displays the quantity of BOM items available in the lot for consumption. If the required quantity of the BOM items specified in the REQUIRED QTY box is less than or equal to the quantity available in the lot, the Available: <quantity_of_parts> message appears in grey, else the message appears in red.
If you entered an exact serial/lot, you can enter the quantity to consume, and then select Consume as mentioned in the steps 8 and 9.
Note: If the entered serial/lot is invalid for any reason, you will be notified with an appropriate error message, as described in Error Messages while Consuming an Exact Serial/Lot Number.

If you searched for multiple serials/lots for a BOM item, a list of serials/lots appears.

The following table provides information on each column in the Consumption History section.
    Column Description
SERIAL/LOT# The serial/lot of the raw material. If you have searched for a serial/lot with a partial name, all the serials/lots that match the partial name appear.
AVAILABLE QTY The available quantity of the serial/lot.
QTY TO CONSUME Box to enter the quantity of consumption of the BOM item.
STORAGE UNIT The unit currently storing the selected product.
DATE/TIME Storage date/time of the serial/lot. By default, the date/time results are sorted in chronological order.
  8. In the QTY TO CONSUME box, enter the quantity of consumption of the BOM item.
    • If you entered the exact serial/lot, then enter the quantity to consume in the QTY TO CONSUME box for that serial/lot number.
    • If you searched for multiple serials/lots for a BOM item, in the Consumption History section, in the QTY TO CONSUME boxes next to the serial/lot numbers, enter the quantity to consume as needed.
Note: If the lot number that you have entered does not exist in Plant Applications, a window appears, asking you whether you want to create the lot number. If that happens, enter the quantity to create and consume, and then select Yes. For more information, refer to Create a Lot.
Note: When you try to consume a risk release BOM item in the Work Queue application. The following confirmation message appears:

One or more of the lots selected are marked as Risk Release. Consumption of this material will result in the generation of a Non Conformance record. Would you like to proceed?

If selected Yes, you are accepting to consume the BOM item and an NCR is automatically created for that serial/lot to which you are clocked on. As you have consumed risk release item, you must Perform Disposition for the NC created in the Non Conformance application and dispose the defect, to indicate that the BOM item is acceptable to consume. The status indicator of the serial/lot is changed from red (when defect created automatically for that serial/lot) to blue (after you close or dispose the defect as acceptable to consume).

If selected No, then you cannot use the risk release BOM item.

However, for a non-serialized lot, you cannot consume the BOM items of that serial/lot having partial risk release BOM items. If you try to consume the partial risk release BOM item, the following message appears:

<SERIAL/LOT#> has partial Risk Release disposition. Cannot consume at this time.

You can only consume a non-serialized lot when complete BOM items of that serial/lot is risk release.
To configure the Defect ID and reason for the Defect in Non Conformance application, you must modify the following properties in the operator-app-service-prod.properties section in Plant Applications Administrator.
    • riskrelease.defecttype.id= An integer value that must match with an id of an existing defect type in the system.
    • riskrelease.defectreason1.id= An integer value that must match with an id of an existing reason tree id in the system. The id of the first level reason tree must belong to the tree id found under the defect_cause_tree_id field of the defect type.
  9. Select Consume.
The Add Serial/Lot # window appears, indicating that the lot number you entered was not found in the Plant Applications database and if you want to create a lot.
  10. In the Material drop-down box, select the material you want from the Primary Material. You can also select substitutions for the material from the Substitutions drop-down list.
    Note:
    • By default, the primary material is displayed in the Material box.
    • If the equipment for the selected material is available, then the equipment will be displayed by default in the EQUIPMENT section, else select the equipment you want from the drop-down list box.
  11. Enter the required serial/lot quantity in the QTY TO CREATE field, enter the quantity of the BOM items that you want to consume on the lot.
    Note:
    • The quantity to consume value in the QTY TO CONSUME field is populated as provided in the Consume section of that material.
    • You must ensure that the mandatory quantity of the material specified in Route Editor for an operation is consumed while performing the operation in Unit Operations.
  12. Select Yes.
An entry for the consumption of the material is added to the table in the Consumption History section. In case you consume more than one lot for an operation, the number of entries in the Consumption History section depends on the number of lots that are consumed. After an entry is created in the Consumption History section, you cannot cancel the consumption of the BOM item. If there are any issues in the Consumption History section, contact your Administrator.
  13. Optional: Select the <BOM item number> links in the page displaying BOM item details to navigate to the previous and next BOM items in a sequential order of the BOM items.
  14. Optional: In the JUMP TO BOM ITEM box, specify the BOM item number that you want to locate and then press Enter. You must enter the complete BOM item number in the search box. Alternatively, to search for a BOM item by using a barcode, select , and then scan for the barcode of the BOM item.

Results

The page containing the selected BOM item details appears. The BOM items are consumed in the selected operation, and the quantity of the BOM items consumed appears in the CONSUMED QTY box in the BOM section.
