Positron-Emission Tomography Detectors

Positron-Emission Tomography Detectors

There is nothing that inspires GE Research scientists and engineers more than transforming technologies that improve or help save people’s lives. Our detector technologists are not an exception; for over 15 years they have been at the center of the Healthcare industry’s transformation of the positron emission tomography (PET) detector technologies.

But this transformation journey is not over yet. Our detector experts are currently working on extending the use of SiPM across all PET scanners – both ToF and non-ToF PET/CT - for improved performance and cost saving. In partnership with world recognized academic partners, GE Research successfully completed two NIH projects on the development of organ dedicated PET systems and planning Ambulatory Brain PET (BRAIN initiative).

Now, they are working on the development next generation detector technologies to push the limit of performance to support non-invasive, quantitative brain imaging at spatial and temporal resolutions currently not achievable with human neuro-PET systems. The developed PET detector technology will also be compatible with operation in an MRI system.

This project is targeted to the NIH Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative. Human brain imaging with PET/MRI will be an essential tool in neuroscience studies to "Develop innovative technologies to understand the human brain and treat its disorders; create and support integrated brain research networks." In addition, they are also developing unique dedicated Breast PET/MR scanner with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution for clinical research.

Project Impact

GE Research detector experts have been instrumental in advancing PET technology. Our team developed the world’s first PET/MR scanner with Time of Flight (ToF) capabilities and first whole-body PET scanner using solid state photosensors (SiPM) - recognized as one of the best tools for research and clinical diagnostics in the scientific and clinical community.
