GEと日立製作所、カメコ社の合弁会社であるグローバル・レーザー・エンリッチメント(GLE)は、本日、原子力発電所の燃料となる濃縮ウランの米国での供給増大をめざし、計画中の次世代濃縮施設の建設・運営に向けて、米国原子力規制委員会(NRC)に許可申請書を提出しました。GLEは、ノースカロライナ州ウィルミントン近郊に、レーザー技術を活用する初めての商用ウラン濃縮施設を建設する計画です。
原子力発電は、温室効果ガスの排出が実質的にゼロであり、今回、新たに本施設を建設することは、米国が抱えるエネルギー安全保障と気候変動対策という2つのニーズに応えると考えています。
