Sydney, Australia -- 19 April 2012: The Qantas Group today announced it has signed a US$2.0 billion order (including spare engines) for advanced LEAP-1A engines to power 78 Airbus A320neo aircraft currently on order.

The LEAP engine, developed by CFM International (a 50/50 joint venture between GE and Snecma (Safran group), is one of the world's most advanced aircraft engines, delivering:

  • 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to today's best CFM engine,
  • 50 percent reduction in oxides of nitrogen emissions, and
  • a 75 percent reduction in the engine noise footprint

President and CEO of GE Australia and New Zealand, Steve Sargent, said this is a milestone for the company: "This marks the biggest order in Australia for our aviation business," Mr Sargent said.

"We have a strong relationship with the Qantas Group, having powered its aircraft for twenty five years.

"We are again honoured to work with the Qantas Group -- arguably one of the best airlines in the world - to have our LEAP engines support their exciting growth plans.
