THE RISE OF DECENTRALIZED ENERGY

The need for distributed energy solutions

There is a proliferation of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) adoption around the world, creating a network of decentralized generation sources that require more intelligent monitoring and control systems to operate effectively with the main power grid. Some examples of DERs are renewables, such as wind and solar, generators, storage devices, and electric vehicles (dynamic charging). There are several key factors driving the DER trend:

going-green

GOING GREEN

Many countries have made policy and regulatory changes, setting targets for the increase of green energy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

SECURITY OF SUPPLY

As traditional fossil-fueled generation plants are reaching end of life or being retired, new generation sources are needed to cover primary energy needs.

NEW REVENUE STREAMS

Power producers are starting to take advantage of new commercial models, including peer-to-peer energy transactions.

DER AVAILABILITY AND AFFORDABILITY

As DERs become more cost effective, we are seeing the rise of the "prosumer", the traditional energy consumer who is now also a producer.

THE DYNAMIC ENERGY LANDSCAPE

Creating a localized microgrid to manage distributed energy

To effectively manage this dynamic energy landscape, power system operators are working with GE to create local distributed energy systems in the form of microgrids. These systems bring together a diverse mix of generation sources—as well as storage, energy monitoring, and control solutions—to establish a localized microgrid that can operate in connection with the grid or separate from the grid.

GE has proven algorithms and analytics tools designed to help each distributed energy system deliver a cost-effective, balanced and reliable grid—across all types of energy sources. GE is also working with customers to establish new financing and ownership models for these new power systems.

Microgrid energy management systems

GE’s Microgrid Energy Management Software (MEMS) puts the power in your hands with the latest controls, software and energy storage solutions. These systems help reduce onsite operating expenses by measuring a site’s current energy needs—and forecasting future     needs—to create a plan that makes the most of your energy generation and storage.

HOW GE DELIVERS SOLUTIONS

GE collaborates with customers right from the start

We work with customers to define the project scope and vision. This process begins with the development of an “Energy Master Plan”, where GE’s consultants perform a detailed cost-benefit analysis of different scenarios to define a multi-year roadmap of capital projects supported by operation and maintenance projects.

The result: a formalized business case with an investment-grade system engineering design that provides the basis of project planning and financing. GE can also deliver the turnkey implementation with O&M service agreements.

WHY GE?

GE's custom approach

Taking a holistic, building blocks approach, GE works with customers to develop tailored solutions aligned to the customers’ key objectives. GE offers tiered project delivery options to fit a customer’s needs, from equipment and engineered packages all the way through to owning and operating a distributed energy solution on a customer’s behalf. We’ll work with you to determine the right delivery model for your business.
