GE Renewable Energy has received an order from Vineyard Wind to supply Haliade-X turbines for Vineyard Wind 1, the first utility-scale offshore wind installation in the U.S. The project will be installed 15 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts and will feature 62 units of the Haliade-X 13 MW turbine.

A few years ago, when GE Renewable Energy announced plans to build an offshore wind turbine so powerful it could generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 16,000 European homes, the project began on the desk of GE engineer Vincent Schellings and his team. “We asked ourselves, ‘What is the biggest rotor we would still feel comfortable with?’” Schellings recalls, “and then we pushed ourselves some more.”
