When Chris Day was in sixth grade, he didn’t feel like one of the cool kids. That is, until the day he broke his battery-powered toy truck and brought it to his dad, James. Instead of buying a new one — Chris knew there was little chance of that — James took a screwdriver to the chassis and pulled out the motor. Then he showed Chris how to wire it to a propeller from a balsa wood airplane. They hooked up a 9-volt battery and voilà: a homemade electric fan. “I brought the fan to school and the kids went crazy,” Chris remembers.
Fifteen months from now, a cruise ship is scheduled to depart from Miami and travel around the world not in 180 days, but in 274. The nine-month Ultimate World Cruise is billed as the longest world cruise in history, and it will take place aboard Royal Caribbean International’s 962-foot Serenade of the Seas, visiting all seven continents and hitting over 150 destinations in more than 60 countries. Deep inside the ship’s belly, powering it throughout its voyage, will be GE technology.
Earlier this week, GE announced a “defining moment” in its history, a plan to form three global public companies, each a leader in its industry, focused on aviation, healthcare and energy.
2020 marked the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 50th year in which Earth Day was celebrated, a quarter-century since the release of the kids’ movie “Toy Story” and — for good measure — the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. GE marked a few significant milestones as well; none featured Buzz Lightyear, but they did involve some pretty cool aviation technology.

Iceland is known for its breathtaking fjords, volcanoes and hot springs. But when Katherine MacManus studied abroad there one summer, she discovered an attraction that's a little harder to convey in an Instagram post: More than 97% of the country's installed power capacity comes from renewable resources.
