Even the most experienced U.S. military pilots may have raised an eyebrow or two when they got their first look at the country’s newest secretive jet. The plane lacked afterburner — a part of the engine that gives fighter jets extra push and helps them go supersonic — it was unstable on all three flight axes without the help of an onboard computer, it had an odd, angular skin and it handled limited payload.

But there was one piece of information that trumped those concerns: the plane was nearly invisible to enemy radar. Now that’s something.

Since the first engines developed by CFM International entered service in the early 1980s, the joint venture between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines has reduced their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 40% compared with the engines that were replaced. Now CFM plans to slash those numbers by another 20%, which would represent the greatest decarbonization gain the partners have ever achieved.

India’s IndiGo airline, one of the world’s fastest-growing low-cost carriers, said on Friday it will use fuel-efficient LEAP-1A engines from CFM International to power its fleet of 310 new Airbus A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR aircraft. The agreement, one of the largest in CFM’s history, includes 620 new installed engines and associated spare engines, as well as a multi-year service agreement. “This is a pivotal milestone that reflects our long-standing commitment to rapidly strengthen our network both domestically and internationally,” said IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta.
