In Sync: How A Steam-Era Machine Can Upgrade The 21st Century Electric Grid

Dorothy Pomerantz
January 15, 2020

The peculiar machine described in the 1920 issue of GE Review — essentially a giant engine designed to produce no mechanical power — seems like nothing more than a charming relic from the early years of electrification. Yet the device, known as “synchronous condenser,” turns out to be far more than a steam-era oddity, as the engineers in charge of today’s electric grid are discovering.

Hot Dam: How Hydro Storage Will Allow Uruguay To Join The 100% Renewables Club

May 16, 2019

Water is the foundation of the South American country of Uruguay – literally. The country’s name means either "river of snails" or "river of birds" in Guarani, one of the indigenous languages of the continent. Wedged between Brazil and Argentina, the nation now plans to use the power of water to wave goodbye to electricity from fossil fuels forever.

This Unique Combo Of Wind And Hydro Power Could Revolutionize Renewable Energy

Tobey Grumet
October 16, 2016
Wind is a clean, cheap source of renewable energy, but it’s also fickle. You can never be sure whether the wind will blow. But engineers in Europe have now found a way to crack this shortcoming by combining it with hydropower. The big idea here is that the wind will generate electricity when it’s, well, windy, and the water will act as a giant battery that will discharge and modulate output when it stops blowing.

Dammed If You Don’t: Why The US Will Lose Big Without Investing In Hydropower

Kristina Johnson
September 28, 2016

Hydropower - energy that comes from water flowing through turbines in dams - is referred to as America’s first renewable electricity source. Kristina Johnson, co-founder and CEO of Cube Hydro, GE Ecomagination Advisory Board Member, and former Under Secretary of Energy, explains how this 100-year old energy source needs a facelift.

Tour De Force: This New Software Is Helping Digitize An Ancient Source Of Energy - Water

Tomas Kellner
July 01, 2016
The city of Briançon sits in a mountainous corner of France that has become a popular destination for cycling fans, who flock to the punishing Tour de France stages there. But it may soon become a required stop for the energy geeks too.
That’s because a dam in the hills above the city recently started testing new software that allows the operators to monitor power generation in a new, revolutionary way.
