Formula 1 is arguably the most popular motorsport in the world, but when the race series arrives in Austin, Texas, this weekend, it will mark the end of an era. Starting in 2014, new technical regulations will dramatically alter the F1 car and reduce the size of the engine, shrink the fuel tank, affect aerodynamics and alter the gear box. “Everybody is starting with a blank slate,” says Caterham F1 Team’s 22-year old reserve driver Alexander Rossi.

■ 预计到2017年新增风电规模将达240吉瓦(1吉瓦=1000兆瓦),而新设计的叶片产生的额外电量足够美国三大主要城市使用。

2013年9月9日,上海------GE全球研发中心近日宣布了一项最新研究成果,将有望对未来风机叶片的设计产生重要影响。通过高性能计算机进行复杂运算,GE工程师突破叶片设计之前存在的局限性,有助于探索新的方式来重新设计风机叶片,使其噪声更低,发电量更大。

GE与位于新墨西哥州阿尔伯克基的Sandia国家实验室合作,主要致力于研究风机叶片噪声预测方式。现代的大功率并网风机,其主要噪声源自空气动力引起的叶片噪声,这也成为风机设计过程中最大的限制因素。降低叶片噪声有助于降低风电成本,提高发电量。事实上,GE预测,转子噪声降低1分贝,每台风机每年发电量将提高2%。预计未来五年,全球会新增近240吉瓦装机。如果发电量提高2%,就会生产出5吉瓦的额外电量,足够为纽约、波士顿和洛杉矶三个城市的全部居民提供用电。

The Art of Science: Supercomputers Help Scientists See What Microscopes and Cameras Can’t Capture

Scientists at GE Global Research have been using the world’s most powerful supercomputers to simulate everything from fuel flowing through jet engine nozzles to water drops turning into ice. The results can be rewarding beyond solving research riddles. “Many times our work generates images that are visually breathtaking,” says Rick Arthur, who leads the Advanced Computing Lab at GRC.
