GE to Open Global Oil & Gas Research Hub in Oklahoma

May 12, 2014
GE Global Research scientists have spent the last year developing a breakthrough “waterless” fracturing method that unlocks oil and natural gas from shale with a mixture of liquid CO2 and sand.
“The vast majority of existing fracturing operations now pump in millions of gallons of pressurized water to do the job,” says Mike Bowman, an engineer in the sustainable energy advanced technology lab. “But the new process could one day eliminate the need for it and make fracturing cleaner and more effective.”

Smash It, Crush It, Blast It: Spring Break It, GE Style

April 22, 2014

When GE engineers wanted to make their jet engines more efficient, they developed a special ceramic material that can operate at temperatures where most metal alloys grow soft. But the idea of putting ceramics inside jet engines was so revolutionary that they took the material to a shooting range and blasted it with steel balls flying at 150 mph to prove that it was viable (see image below).image

New Order in Babel: Industrial Internet Consortium Will Make Machines and People Talk to Each Other

March 27, 2014

The Internet is no longer just about email, ecommerce or Twitter. “We are at an inflection point,” says Joe Salvo, manager of Complex Systems Engineering Laboratory at GE Global Research. “The next wave of productivity will connect brilliant machines and people.”

But before that happens, they must find a common language. “It’s still like the Tower of Babel,” Salvo says. “We need to bring them together in powerful new networks.”
