Hot Off The Press: 3D Printing Has Pushed This Gas Turbine To New Highs

In 2012, Andrew Passmore thought he had taken a machine to its limits. His team of engineers had just upgraded a gas turbine powerful enough to supply with electricity the equivalent of  200,000 European homes. It was the second upgrade in seven years, but the team still managed to wring an extra 12 megawatts (MW) from the turbine, boosting its power capacity to 180 MW.

One particularly rich area is a limestone and shale hillock just outside Cincinnati called Trammel Fossil Park. Every day, amateur archaeologists equipped with hammers and buckets descend on the place to look for the starfishlike Isorophus cincinnatiensis, the official fossil of Cincinnati, and its ancient cousins.

There was something unusual about a bicycle parked near the entrance to GE’s first Industry in 3D summit, which took place Thursday in New York’s historic West Village neighborhood. Developed by the German designer Ralf Holleis, the bike had ornate lugs that harkened back to an era when artisanal handicraft ruled, but the way they were made — printed by a laser from fine layers of titanium powder, making the bike lighter than a regulation Tour de France model — pointed to the future.

Ship Shapes: New 3D Printing Research Aims To Rejuvenate Navy Gear

"When a warship breaks down, the Navy needs to get it running again right away. A new GE Global Research program is developing ways to scan and 3D-print replacement parts out of metal melted with lasers, to get them back to the ship as quickly as possible.
The Navy cares about this technology because its fleet is aging, with ships dating back decades. Many of the parts that make up these vessels are so old that substitutes are no longer manufactured, and replacement parts have to be custom-designed.
