Peterson recognized as a role model for young African American women during the IBE's 39th Annual Summer Celebration
NISKAYUNA, New York and WASHINGTON, July 29, 2009 --- Recognized as a role model and mentor who is helping to develop a new generation of young black leaders, Theresa H. Peterson, Manager of External Affairs and Technology programs for GE Global Research Center, received the Woman of Vision Award from the Indiana Black Expo. The Expo is a year-round, multifaceted community service organization in the state of Indiana that serves as an advocate for the social and economic advancement of African-Americans.
Peterson was honored during a corporate luncheon that was held as part of the IBE's 39th Annual Summer Celebration. She joined an impressive list of honorees recognized for their leadership and contributions at the Luncheon, including actor and comedian Jamie Foxx, award-winning actress Gabrielle Union, R&B singer Charles Wilson and Max Siegel, entertainment executive and founder of the 909 group.
Mark Little, Senior Vice President and Director, GE Global Research, said, "Theresa is one of our most visible stars for GE in Washington D.C. Her knowledge, vision and the universal respect she has among her peers have made her such an effective advocate for GE and an example for others to follow. Her accomplishments and the dedication she has made to mentoring young black leaders within the company, makes her truly deserving of this special honor."
Dr. Reginald Smith, a lead biologist and President of the Global Research Chapter of GE's African American Forum, said, "Theresa has been a champion for so many young African American scientists and engineers here at GE. As many have moved from academia to the corporate world, she has been a great source of advice and guidance in helping us make the transition and ultimately chart a successful career path."
Peterson joined GE Global Research in 2004 to pursue research and development opportunities for the Research Center in Washington DC as well as build support for strategic initiatives with senior government officials and members of Congress. In 2008, she was promoted to her present position as Manager of External Affairs and Technology programs at GE Global Research. In her current role, Peterson is responsible for leading the company's strategic initiative to build and expand its external research and development (R&D) partnerships within the U.S. and around the world.
Prior to joining GE, Theresa spent 9½ years managing 3M's Federal research and development funding program. She was also a Senior Legislative Assistant for Senator Wyche Fowler of Georgia and Legislative Director for Congressman Don Johnson (D-GA-10). Theresa is also a participant with the Woman's Leadership Forum, Corporate Advisory Council of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated.
Peterson holds a bachelor's degree from Simmons College in Boston and a master's degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She is a proud graduate of Glynn Academy High School and a native of Brunswick, Georgia. Today, Theresa lives in Lorton, Virginia with her husband Major (Ret) Terence Peterson, US Army and their two children, Terence Joseph, 6, and Taylor Grace, 4.
