IDC MarketScape Names GE Power as a Leader in Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems

August 30, 2018

San Ramon, California - IDC MarketScape has named GE Power as a Leader in the recent IDC MarketScape: North America Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems 2018 Vendor Assessment (Doc #US41793416), August 2018. The report examines the current landscape for Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMSs) and evaluates major vendors across the region.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are units of local generation, storage and other energy resources typically connected to the grid at the distribution level. Encompassing both demand and supply-side resources -  such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, smart inverters, energy storage and electric vehicles - DERs increasingly play an important role within the electric grid power distribution system and how it is operated. The rise of DERs has been driven by a combination of regulatory changes, the emergence of third-party aggregators and significant cost and efficiency improvements in DER technology. DERs are driving the need for more predictive and prescriptive software solutions to solve the increasing complexity of network operations.

The IDC MarketScape examined several factors related to the DERMS marketplace, including: capabilities of the vendor and product, how well the vendor delivers, the product’s alignment to customer needs today and the vendor’s planned future market investments. Positionings are based on feedback from buyers, end users and IDC market experts, as well as interviews with vendors.

GE’s DER orchestration solutions enable utilities to manage both utility and non-utility DERs from planning to operations, via a range of deployment options including on-premise and cloud-based systems. GE’s solutions use automation and adaptive technology to optimize grid operations, maintain distribution grid stability, enhance load forecasting and manage the impact of distributed generation. DERMS is part of GE’s comprehensive Digital Energy portfolio designed to meet the needs of the full electric delivery system.

“DERs may prove to be the single most disruptive influence in the history of the electric grid,” said GE Power’s Chief Digital Officer Steven Martin. “Effective management requires modeling and awareness of physical characteristics combined with advanced technologies. Our software provides operators with the requisite tools and situational intelligence to recognize developing situations, act quickly and decisively and orchestrate flexibility across the grid for both utility and non-utility DERs.”
