Smart Metering Operations Suite Optimized for Speed and Reliability on Oracle Exadata Database Machine
AMSTERDAM---October 16, 2013---GE's Digital Energy business (NYSE: GE) today announced it has achieved Oracle Exadata Optimized status through Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), demonstrating that its Smart Metering Operations Suite (SMOS) version 4.0.1 has been tested and tuned on Oracle Exadata Database Machine to deliver speed, scalability and reliability to customers. Oracle Exadata provides a database of massive flash memory to store crucial metering information for smart metering operations. Together with this hardware, GE's SMOS provides a complete meter and transaction management system capable of housing and analyzing raw usage data. GE is a Gold level member of OPN.
GE's SMOS provides a set of software tools to manage and operate a utility's smart meter estate. Offering customers a completely scalable solution, GE's SMOS solution is designed to deliver the functionality required to communicate with, operate and manage a utility's smart meter network, making it an integral part of a grid management solution. In addition, GE's SMOS software solution is future flexible, allowing for easy updates and upgrades. It provides back-office integration functions that can deliver data from across the network to operational core systems such as outage management systems and other applications. SMOS is part of GE's comprehensive advanced metering infrastructure solution, which includes smart meters, communication solutions and software applications.
Running on Oracle Exadata, GE's SMOS can process data from 100 million smart meters in less than 100 minutes[1]. SMOS is based on Oracle Database and utilizes many of the advanced features of Oracle Exadata to deliver a robust and resilient operational solution. GE's SMOS running on Oracle Exadata offers functionality, scalability, performance, extensibility and is a core part of the company's advanced metering infrastructure offering.
Achieving the Oracle Exadata Optimized status enables GE to offer an integrated and performance-optimized hardware and software solution capable of meeting today's advanced metering challenges. To achieve Oracle Exadata Optimized status, GE's SMOS had to complete Oracle's rigorous testing program.
"Oracle Exastack Optimized recognizes partners who have optimized their solutions on a complete, integrated and cloud-ready infrastructure in order to help them accelerate innovation, unlock new features and functionality and deliver superior value to users," said Chris Baker, senior vice president, Worldwide ISV, OEM and Java Sales, Oracle. "By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, GE has demonstrated its Smart Metering Operations Suite is tested and tuned to work with Oracle Exadata Database Machine to help deliver optimum performance, scalability and reliability to their customers."
Oracle Exadata Optimized is part of the Oracle Exastack Optimized program, which allows partners, such as GE, to utilize OPN enablement resources and dedicated lab environments to help develop, test and tune their applications on Oracle Exadata.
By achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status, Oracle recognizes GE's Digital Energy business for developing, testing and tuning its Smart Metering Operations Suite on the Oracle Exadata. Together, Oracle Exadata and GE's SMOS can provide customers with advanced data management capabilities, near linear scalability and high availability---a strong combination that can help lower the total cost of ownership. Achieving Oracle Exadata Optimized status is a testament to GE's ability to deliver the extreme performance and reliability customers require.
"When running on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, SMOS, GE's latest software product for mission-critical applications, demonstrated massive scalability and secure high-performance data processing," said Mike Carlson, general manager---software solutions, GE's Digital Energy business. "It was able to process more than 3.4 billion data items per hour. The ability to process that much data in such a short period of time demonstrates that our advanced application software is ready to meet the challenges brought to light in the ever-evolving world of big data and the Industrial Internet. Operating on Oracle Exadata Database Machine, our SMOS software can provide an incrementally scalable solution that can reduce total cost of ownership and can support up to 100 million smart meters1."
