GE Measurement & Control Launches New Software to Monitor, Protect and Improve Industrial Equipment Performance

September 30, 2013

  • Three new configurations of Bently Nevada's industrial internet ADAPT technology launched
  • Extends real-time condition monitoring solution currently deployed on wind turbines to new applications, including gas turbines
  • Emergency shutdown and overspeed protection capabilities predict and prevent machinery failure

HOUSTON, TEXAS and MINDEN, NEV.---September 30, 2013---GE's Measurement & Control business today announced at Turbomachinery Symposium 2013 the launch of Bently Nevada ADAPT (Advanced Distributed Architecture Platform Technology) 3701. Previously a condition monitoring solution developed solely for wind turbines, ADAPT now supports a wide range of OEM turbines and associated driven assets in several applications, including aeroderivatives, through the new 3701 series.

The 3701 enables plant managers in operations of all sizes to safely protect and improve the longevity of their industrial assets, and ensure the highest level of productivity in a safe environment. Data collected by the 3701 enables operators to make more informed business decisions helping to avoid costly, dangerous equipment failures and plant shutdowns.

Included in the 3701 product family are the ADAPT Aero, which provides distributed monitoring and protection capability in a scalable, skid-mounted architecture for LM2500 and LM6000 gas turbines and associated gearboxes, and the ADAPT Emergency Shutdown (ESD), which delivers overspeed detection and implements emergency shutdown when necessary, a key requirement of API 670, an industry compliance standard. Also included is the ADAPT GT, which protects and monitors gas turbines.

With hundreds of new plants built each year -- most of which are equipped for distributed architecture monitoring technology -- ADAPT will provide users with actionable information to prevent unforeseen downtime and improve plant productivity. ADAPT's distributed architecture is used to monitor the behavior and health of plant assets right at the site of the asset, compared to traditional monitoring configurations typically located in a centralized and controlled environment, which offers added flexibility and benefit to the customer.

"What sets GE apart from any other competitor is over 50 years' experience in protecting and monitoring industrial assets," said Don Marshall, GE Measurement & Control product manager for Bently Nevada's ADAPT product line. "With the 3701 platform, we bring to market a monitor that uses sophisticated signal processing, measurements, and health indices to form the foundation of a very intelligent distributed data acquisition system for OEM control and instrumentation packages. This product enables operators to more precisely understand the condition of their assets from a remote location and take proactive measures to avoid costly downtime."

The vision for the ADAPT 3701 platform includes advanced diagnostic capabilities to further support GE Measurement & Control's Industrial Internet solutions, which seek to improve the health and productivity of the world's most critical assets and systems through advanced, sensor-based measurement, non-destructive testing, inspection and condition monitoring, and flow and process control solutions.
