GE Capital partners with Refuge to aid women and children affected by domestic violence

May 16, 2013

Leading Charity supported with a donation from GE Capital to mark International Women's Day

London, 7th March 2013: GE Capital has built on its long term relationship with the West London branches of Refuge with a donation to mark International Women's day. The donation will fund clothing and school equipment for women and children fleeing domestic violence, as well as refurbishment projects and outings which will be manned by GE volunteers. This will free up the time of Refuge's staff, enabling them to provide more front line support to women and children affected by domestic violence.

Refuge has led the campaign against domestic violence since 1971, when the charity opened its first safe house for women and children escaping domestic violence in Chiswick, West London. Today Refuge is the UK's largest single provider of specialist domestic violence services, supporting 2,000 women and children every day in safe houses across the country, as well as via outreach services and a 24 hour National Domestic Violence Helpline.

GE Capital has worked with Refuge on various projects for a number of years. To mark International Women's day on the 8th March 2013, GE Capital has pledged to donate $5,000 to Refuge. This is in addition to various fundraising activities and volunteering events for Refuge, which GE Capital plan to undertake throughout the year.

Sandra Horley CBE, Chief Executive of Refuge said: "GE has been a fantastic supporter of Refuge for many years, helping to sustain our vital work with women and children experiencing domestic violence. I am delighted that GE has donated such a fantastic sum of money to support our work and to mark International Women's Day. Alongside supporting our services, some of the money donated by GE will be used to fund an Easter trip, providing relief and fun to over 100 women and children. On behalf of all at Refuge, thank you so much."

Mary Fitzpatrick, Diversity Leader of GE Capital EMEA, advised: "Refuge is an organisation which makes a huge difference to the lives of women and children who experience domestic violence across the UK. International Women's Day is a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate the great work that Refuge do, and we are delighted to build on what is already a long term and successful partnership

GE Capital's global CSR programme is part of the company's commitment to strengthening communities through philanthropy and volunteering. GE Capital puts its resources and employees' skills and experience to work to help the community, and bring best practices back to the business.
