- Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Calls for Cooperation with the Local Government to Increase Power Capacity
- Agreement Also Supports Russia's Initiative to Modernize Energy Infrastructure
- Aeroderivative Gas Turbines, Other GE Technologies Covered under the MOU
MOSCOW---March 5, 2013---GE (NYSE: GE) and the Sakhalin provincial government today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together in developing power generation projects to meet the future energy needs of Sakhalin Island, off the east coast of Russia. The MOU covers a wide range of GE technology options, including aeroderivative gas turbines, gas engines, coal gasification and wind power.
"Based on the success of our earlier projects, GE and the local government want to increase our cooperation in bringing reliable power to the people of Sakhalin Island. The MOU opens the way for several local power companies on Sakhalin to start working with GE to develop specific projects based on LM aeroderivative gas turbines and other GE equipment," said Darryl Wilson, president and CEO---aeroderivative gas turbines for GE Power & Water. "Because of Sakhalin Island's remote location, it is critical to have reliable, flexible and efficient sources of local power generation. We believe that GE's advanced technology is an excellent match for these requirements."
As part of the MOU, GE and the Sakhalin government will work together to develop the 60-megawatt Nogliki project at Sakhalin Island based on two LM2500+G4 aeroderivative gas turbines. GE already has supplied five LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines for projects on Sakhalin Island.
"A reliable local supply of electricity is critical to the future economic growth of this region and to the quality of life of our citizens," said Sergey Hotochkin, deputy prime minister of the Sakhalin. "In addition to addressing the region's need for more power, the MOU with GE supports the Russian government's initiative to modernize the country's energy infrastructure."
Sakhalin is the largest island in Russia and relies heavily on oil and gas exports, coal mining, forestry and fishing. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and economic liberalization, Sakhalin has experienced an oil and gas boom with extensive petroleum exploration and mining by most large oil multinational corporations, creating major opportunities for technology suppliers such as GE. For example, GE Oil & Gas has supplied turbo-compression technology to the Sakhalin Energy Investment Company for an oil and gas production platform off the coast the Sakhalin Island.
