Biman Bangladesh Airlines Celebrates 40 Years of Service

January 04, 2012

BANGLADESH -- January 4, 2012--- Biman Bangladesh Airlines is celebrating its 40th year in service. The national carrier of Bangladesh, Biman Bangladesh Airlines began operating on January 4, 1972 with a gift of a DC-3 aircraft from the Bangladesh Air Force. Forty years later, Biman flies passengers and cargo to 18 international destinations in Asia and Europe and provides convenient transfer connections from Dhaka to regional destinations.

"Boeing's strong relationship with Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been built through trust and dedication over the past four decades," said J. Miguel Santos, Director International Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "We congratulate Biman Bangladesh Airlines on its 40th anniversary and look forward to adding many more milestones in the future."

"GE Aviation congratulates Biman Bangladesh Airlines on its 40 years of operation, and with its fleet of GE and CFM* engines in operation and on order, we look forward to working together for 40 more years into the future," said Nalin Jain, Vice President, South Asia for GE Aviation.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Boeing and GE have developed a strong connection, and recent orders from the airline will ensure this relationship continues for many more years. Biman is operating two CFM56-7B-powered Boeing Next Generation 737-800s with two more on order, one CF6-powered 747 and four CF6-powered DC10s.

Late last year, Biman took delivery of two new Boeing 777-300ERs with GE90-115B engines with an order for an additional two GE90-powered Boeing 777-300ERs. The GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777 aircraft/engine combination has proven to be extremely popular with customers around the world. To date, more than 780 GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777s have been ordered by 65 customers.

In addition to an unrivaled thrust rating of 115,000 pounds, the GE90-115B offers the enhanced performance and efficiency of three-dimensional, aerodynamic (3D aero) compressor airfoils and wide-chord, swept fan blades. The GE90-115B performance and efficiency, coupled with the GE90-115B dual annular combustor technology, significantly limits fuel consumption and restricts hydrocarbon emissions to 40 percent of the level permitted by current international standard. Snecma of France, Avio SpA of Italy and IHI Corporation of Japan are revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program. The GE90-115B engine is part of GE's "ecomagination" product portfolio -- GE's commitment to implementing innovative, cost-effective technologies that enhance the customers' environmental and operating performance.
