Go With The Flow: These Engineers Are Building A Fish-Friendly Hydropower Plant

Eve Weston
November 04, 2019
In the Pacific Northwest, salmon don’t stay still for long. They are born in fresh water, take off downstream to mature in the ocean and then, when they’re old enough, they head back upriver to spawn in their birthplace, starting the cycle again. Most people have seen pictures of bears snatching returning salmon out of the water as they leap back upriver, but the fish face obstacles on their way down, as well. Navigating hydropower dams is a big one.

Hot Dam: How Hydro Storage Will Allow Uruguay To Join The 100% Renewables Club

May 16, 2019

Water is the foundation of the South American country of Uruguay – literally. The country’s name means either "river of snails" or "river of birds" in Guarani, one of the indigenous languages of the continent. Wedged between Brazil and Argentina, the nation now plans to use the power of water to wave goodbye to electricity from fossil fuels forever.

Pumped Hydro — a deeper and more meaningful energy solution

Natalie Filatoff
March 07, 2018
"The Snowy Mountains Scheme resonates as a nation-building project in Australia’s history.  Today Snowy Hydro’s hard-working, relatively simple technology — which harnesses falling water to turn turbines that generate electricity — is a renewable-energy mainstay of the interconnected state electricity grids of eastern and southern Australia.

Bruce Watson
October 25, 2017
Scandinavian power company Fortum is the top producer of "certified" renewable electricity in Finland and Sweden. Much of it comes from 169 hydroelectric plants, some more than a century old, that use fast-flowing water to spin turbines and generate power. But how do you make sure that something built during the flapper era remains reliable and up to snuff?
Give it a brain.
