Proving Ground: This U.K. Facility Is Preparing To Put The World’s Largest Wind Turbine To Test

Dorothy Pomerantz
May 30, 2018
Marc Sala has a huge challenge on his hands. The giant turbine he’s helping bring to market, the Haliade-X, will stand 260 meters tall, about the same height as New York’s iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza skyscraper. With blades that are longer than a football field, the turbine will have a generator capable of producing 12 megawatts — 2.5 MW more than current turbines and enough to supply the equivalent energy needed to supply 16,000 homes.

After Epic Road Trip, This 241-Foot Wind Turbine Blade Is Ready To Get Down To Business In Germany

Maggie Sieger
December 22, 2017
In October, employees at LM Wind Power’s wind turbine blade factory in Castellón, Spain, briefly left their posts to send off their biggest achievement to date — all 241 feet of it.
They sent the huge blade — four times longer than a bowling lane and the largest ever produced in Spain — to the local port, loaded it on a boat and shipped it to Germany, where it will harvest wind at the Merkur wind farm in the North Sea.

From a distance, the large blacktop parking lot behind GE’s wind turbine factory in Saint-Nazaire, France, looks like the Galactic Empire’s base for AT-AT walkers. Over the last few months, the field has been slowly filling up with rows of massive gray-and-red behemoths rising 10 meters from the ground.
