High-Tech Harriet Turbines Make Generating Energy From Shale Gas In Pennsylvania More Efficient

Two of the world’s most efficient gas turbines, made by GE in Greenville, South Carolina, will drive a new power plant built by Moxie Energy and Caithness Energy in Salem Township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The 1,029-megawatt (MW) facility, called Caithness Moxie Freedom generation plant, will tap natural gas from the world’s most prolific shale gas area, the Marcellus Formation, and generate enough electricity to power approximately 1 million American homes when the plant comes online in 2018. It will help Pennsylvania and the wider region shift away from coal to cleaner energy.

Abdullah is the president of the Sapphire Group, one of Pakistan’s largest textile companies with 16,000 employees, $800 million in annual revenues, and a global base of customers. But when his country started running out of electricity a decade ago, he switched gears and built a large power plant in Muridke, just north of Pakistan’s second largest city Lahore. “Moving into power generation was a step that made sense,” he says.

GE: Providing a more effective and innovative solution to power Vietnam

With energy demands growing rapidly, Vietnam is optimising electricity generation to ensure its power-hungry industries stay on the grid. The Vietnamese government expects the electricity demand to reach 360 billion kWh in 2020, compared to a projected 210 kWh in 2015. In line with the rising demand, total investment for the power sector is estimated to reach $48.8 billion in 2020 and nearly $75 billion in the period from 2021 to 2030. Given this scenario, the Vietnamese have been exploring more efficient ways to generate power, both in terms of costs as well as impact to the environment.

Desalination: Salt of the earth in the fight against water scarcity

The scarcity of fresh water resources and the need for additional water supply are critical issues in many countries around the world, including Indonesia. By 2015, Indonesia’s total population is projected to reach 247.5 million, as reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS).  That means Indonesia needs as much as 9,391 billion mof water by 2015; 47% more water than it needed in 2000.
