Next-generation passenger jets powered by engines with 3D-printed parts dominated the 2017 Paris Air Show.
GE and its partners have received more than $31 billion in new business at the show, which opened Monday. The bulk of those orders are for a new family of LEAP jet engines with 3D-printed fuel nozzles. The LEAP engine was developed by CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture between GE  and France’s Safran Aircraft Engines.

Everything that has happened to this point — the hundreds of hours of bombardment with ice, the exposure to dust and debris that simulated 3,000 takeoffs and landings — was just the prelude. Low fuel prices and more airplanes in the air are taking us into a new golden age for aviation, according to the mood here at the 2017 Paris Air Show, which starts on Monday. Data from the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) trade group show that the global passenger volume will grow by 7.4 percent in 2017 and the number of planes will increase by 3.8 percent. Automation and technology have made working on an oil rig easier, but it's still a tough job — in no small part because of the weather. In the North Sea, for example, many rigs face howling gales, frigid waters and crashing waves as high as 40 feet. As a result, a very tricky part of a rig job remains getting there. Helicopter pilots must navigate complex approaches and, despite precautions and a focus on safety, there are a number of crashes every year.

Yari Bovalino
May 05, 2017
On Jan. 18, a series of earthquakes sent 120 tons of snow careening into the Hotel Rigopiano at the foot of Gran Sasso mountain in central Italy and spurred Giuseppe Briganti into action. Briganti and his crew from the Italy State Police’s 11th Flight Department in Pescara spent hours airlifting victims to hospitals and bringing back supplies in a rescue helicopter. For the pilots the emergency was large-scale but not  unanticipated.

The Hydes' oldest daughter is an IT business analyst, their son is a computer engineer, and their youngest daughter will be studying art and psychology. Scott Reynolds’ daughters, both of whom were at the top of their classes in high school and college, now work in education, one as a teacher and the other as an operations manager for a national charter school network. When they were young, their father showed them a profile American Girl magazine had written about their grandmother’s career at GE.
