The LNG Game: GE and Shell Are Working Together to Lower Emissions at Liquefied Natural Gas Facilities

Gregor Macdonald
November 14, 2022

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity has really taken off in the past decade, with big players like Australia and the United States getting into the game. More than 500 billion cubic meters of LNG were exported globally in 2021, up 44% since 2016, according to the BP Statistical Review. But with fast growth set to continue, there is a growing urgency to reduce the carbon emissions of LNG production facilities.

“We can’t imagine a world without flight, and yet we can’t live with the pollution that it produces,” U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm declared last week at the Global Clean Energy Action Forum (GCEAF) in Pittsburgh. The topic: “Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Taking Off Across the Globe.”

Prepare for Impact: How GE’s Climate Action Challenge Fostered 85 Employee Environmental Projects in 90 Days

Colin Vogt stands on a berm at the northern edge of GE Aerospace’s Evendale campus, outside Cincinnati. The offices and manufacturing facilities are visible in the distance, but here Indian paintbrush, coreopsis, and native Ohio prairie grasses sway in the hot summer wind. In two years, this area will be very popular with bees, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The shoulder-high plants will pull carbon dioxide from the air. And the berm, which was built several years ago to keep runoff along I-75 from flooding the property, will be more stable than ever.

For the first time in more than 100 years, the global energy landscape is undergoing a massive transformation. The way we generate, transport, distribute, and consume electricity will change more in the next 10 years than it did in the previous 125. What was once an orderly, monolithic system pushing power out to the people, the electric grid is transforming into a two-way highway of energy from diverse sources — including wind and solar — which present new challenges to grid stability and reliability.

NASA Touches Down At Farnborough: Agency To Spotlight Work In Sustainable Aviation And Partnership With GE

Dianna Delling
July 17, 2022

Images sent back from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope last week not only stunned the world visually; they changed the way humans think about the universe. But not every paradigm-shifting NASA project takes place so far away. Much closer to home, the agency is doing groundbreaking and essential work on more sustainable aviation, working with partners like GE to develop quieter, safer and more efficient technologies that promise to change the future of commercial air travel.
