With GE Vernova standing at the threshold of becoming a new purpose-built, energy-focused company in a few short weeks, it’s worth noting the inspiration for its name. It is, says the company, “a combination of ver, derived from verde and verdant to signal the greens and blues of the Earth, and nova, from the Latin novus, or ‘new.’” Novus also happens to be one of the roots of the word “innovation,” a pillar of GE from its founding. Innovation, then, is literally in the company’s DNA.

Less than a year ago, GE Reports brought you the story of some of the people working to build the Tallawarra B power station, north of Sydney, Australia. This week, EnergyAustralia announced the opening of Tallawarra B, which is the first dual-fuel gas-and-hydrogen power plant in Australia. It will add as much as 320 megawatts (MW) to the grid, enough to power the equivalent of about 150,000 Australian homes.

The country’s north coast is deliciously rich in wind resources, and a joint venture between the PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Ørsted have awarded a consortium made up of GE Vernova and Polimex Mostostal a contract to help build a new offshore wind farm there using the latest transmission and grid automation technologies.

The world needs a breakthrough to lower emissions from heavy industry, and a solution may be brewing in Japan. IHI Corporation, one of the country’s oldest manufacturers, and GE Vernova have teamed up in recent years to work to unlock the secrets of ammonia. Under their latest joint development agreement, signed on Christmas Day 2023, the companies will work for the next two years developing technology to combust ammonia in turbines that normally run on natural gas.
