Riders On The Storm: GE Is Building A Wind Turbine That Can Weather Violent Typhoons, Hurricanes

June 17, 2018

Much like hurricanes in the northern Atlantic, typhoons are a perennial menace threatening Japan, the Philippines, China and other nations sitting on the Pacific Rim. Last year the region endured 11 of these tropical cyclones, whose winds can toss vehicles into the air, uproot trees and tear roofs from houses.

How A Wind Turbine Works

August 24, 2017
As countries grow more populace, the demand for electricity becomes strenuous to meet especially amidst global warming. Vietnam has come up with a master plan to undertake this problem by optimizing their most valuable resource, the wind. The 3,400km stretch of coastline could potentially provide 500-1000 kWh/m2 of wind power per year.
The infographic captures the mechanics of a wind turbine and exemplifies Vietnam’s 7th Power Master Plan to meet the rapidly growing demand for electricity in a sustainable fashion.

What America's First Offshore Wind Farm Reveals About GE’s Alstom Deal

November 04, 2015
Block Island is a teardrop-shaped piece of land some 13 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, U.S. It’s best known for its beaches, wind-swept bluffs and summer vacation homes. But a new attraction is quickly rising three miles off its southeastern shore.

The Road to ecoROTR: How Building a Better Wind Turbine Began With an Online Shopping Spree for Styrofoam Balls

October 17, 2015
Scientists at GE Global Research spent the last four years building a more efficient wind turbine. It rises 450-feet above the Mojave desert in California – almost half the height of the Eiffel Tower — and seems to have a silver UFO stuck to its face. The turbine may appear strange, but you are looking at the future of wind power. Here's how it came about.

It looks like a UFO stuck on a giant utility pole, but the ecoROTR – or Energy Capture Optimization by Revolutionary Onboard Turbine Reshape – could light the way to bigger, better and more efficient wind turbines. “As far as I know, there’s nothing like this in the world,” says Mike Bowman, leader of sustainable energy projects at GE Global Research.

There Is an App For That: GE Links Apps, Battery, Turbine to Sell WindPower to Order

May 01, 2013

Is a blustery day a boon for a wind farm or too much of a good thing? It depends, says Keith Longtin, general manager for wind products at GE’s renewable energy business. “The grid can’t always accept wind power as fast as it comes up,” Longtin says. “When it’s gusting, turbines turn their blades out of the wind and let some of the power pass through. That revenue is gone with the wind.”
