August 08, 2018
A passing comment by her mum’s coworker turned out to be a boon for young Katrina Williamson, about to finish high school in New Zealand and hoping to study law at the country’s prestigious Victoria University in Wellington. Linda Williamson is a laboratory quality-control technician with GE Healthcare in Tauranga, and a colleague gave her the tip about the GE Star Awards. “After that, I kept an eye out for the emails about them,” says Linda, “but Katrina dealt with all of the application communication, which was quite a process!”

In a motel in Kingaroy, outback Queensland, this training session is instantly distinct from familiar corporate-education days: the facilitator has set off passionate discussions before the participants have even finished their first coffee. “What are the top dangers you have little or no control of when you’re at work?” he asks. The focus in the room is unwavering as he writes up the answers they call out on the whiteboard. Forget the standard workplace gripes of inbox overload, pointless meetings, stolen lunches from the communal fridge.

Natalie Filatoff
July 04, 2018
Time on wing (TOW) is an aircraft-engine term that conjures a sense of freedom and a glorious bird’s-eye view. In fact, it represents an eagle eye on fleet availability, required maintenance resources and the overall cost of running those engines. This year, GE field-service engineers embedded with the Australian Army 6th Aviation Regiment and the Royal Australian Air Force Classic Hornet fleet observed sky-high times on wing for the engines under their care.

Inside the jet-engine room of GE Aviation Services with Jean Lydon-Rodgers

Natalie Filatoff
June 19, 2018
In a highly competitive jet-engine market, aviation services are flying high. Services and maintenance, traditionally considered in the industry to be the “aftermarket” of engine sales, formed 63% of GE Aviation sales in 2017. It’s easy to imagine the commercial aircraft-engine market as cyclical — with an outstanding engine such as the GE GEnx-1B that powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner experiencing a rush of orders before service contracts rev up. But there are other market factors driving demand for efficient, targeted service packages.
