Aerospace technology aids Australia’s transition to renewable energy

Amy Mathews
February 19, 2019

Jet engines are subject to rapid-changes in power demands — revving exponentially up and turning on a sixpence to ramp down again. Technology derived from those engines is proving a perfect companion to Australia’s burgeoning intermittent renewable-energy supply: aeroderivative gas turbines ramp faster than the Roaring Forties into zephyr-less intervals, they’re instantly responsive to cloud cover over the Pilbara, and coolly cope with air-con hour on Australia’s summer grid.

An industrial revelation for Sydney

Jane Nicholls
December 18, 2018
How will additive manufacturing change the world? We’re yet to imagine all the places this innovative technology can go and the multiple improvements and efficiencies it will unlock through advanced manufacturing. That’s why GE Additive’s chief technology officer Dr Christine Furstoss describes it as “an industrial revelation”, though additive is also undoubtedly a key component of the fourth Industrial Revolution.

December 12, 2018
With 13 years and counting in the Broome Aboriginal Medical Service (BRAMS), Tamsen Prunster, a second-generation registered nurse and midwife is the trusted go-to for a wide community of expectant and new mums. In a practice that usually has 50-60 pregnant women on its books, Prunster says ultrasound is an indispensable tool for checking in on babies in utero. When invited to extend her ultrasound knowledge and apply for the 2018 Zedu-GE Rural and Remote Ultrasound Scholarship, Prunster didn’t hesitate and wrote the winning application.

Cypress: the world’s most powerful wind turbines

Jane Nicholls
December 06, 2018
The cost of renewable energy continues to follow a sharp downward curve and the technological advances to improve its generating capacity, flexibility and reliability are going upward just as dramatically.
“For renewable energy to keep going as strongly as it has been, we do need to keep bringing down the cost and to do that, we need the latest technology,” says Jérôme Pécresse, global CEO of GE Renewable Energy. “The product cycle for wind energy has accelerated greatly — we introduce new turbines or new platforms to the market every one to two years.”

How Sydney’s newest hospital got its “wow” factor

Natalie Filatoff
November 07, 2018
For weeks, digital signs on trailers have been parked on arterial roads around Sydney’s Northern Beaches, alerting residents that the area’s new primary hospital was about to open. What they couldn’t express in their limited language, is how Northern Beaches Hospital forms the new cornerstone of cutting-edge care for a district which has been limping along for years on ageing healthcare infrastructure.

Five-year-old Wellingtonian, Albert Rich, has ambitions to be “a wind farm builder”. At home and at preschool, he convinces his friends to take part in constructing turbines from cardboard tubing and any likely blade materials to hand, sometimes trucking them in from … another room.

Australia’s biggest 3D printing education program

Jane Nicholls
August 17, 2018
Additive manufacturing—3D printing to most of us—is changing the world one innovation at a time, and moving so fast that it’s a challenge for industry to keep up, let alone education curriculums, not renowned for their agility. It’s essential to foster a strong base of knowledge in 3D printing for the workforce of tomorrow, when being across basic design thinking, data analytics and coding will be considered as essential as reading, writing and arithmetic have been for previous generations.
