A little over a year ago, the Haliade-X offshore wind turbine set an important record when a working prototype of the machine, located at the Port of Rotterdam, became the first wind turbine to produce 288 megawatt-hours of energy within 24 hours. That may have been enough to power 30,000 households in that area but it wasn’t enough for the Haliade-X, which just bested the feat.

Last December, when Time magazine listed the Haliade-X among the best inventions of 2019, it was just one in a series of milestones for the mighty machine — the most powerful offshore wind turbine in operation today. Following its moment in the media spotlight, the Haliade-X proceeded to set a world record by generating 288 megawatt-hours of electrical energy in a single day.

Power Move: GE Signs First Contract For The World’s Most Powerful Offshore Wind Turbine In Operation

Tomas Kellner
September 21, 2020

John Lavelle has seen many powerful machines during his nearly four decades as a GE engineer. But none measure up to the Haliade-X, the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine in operation. The turbine set a world record earlier this year when it generated 288 megawatt-hours of electrical energy in a single day. That’s enough to power 30,000 homes in Rotterdam, where the first prototype is located.

Press Release

Today’s Most Powerful Wind Turbine, GE’s Haliade-X 12 MW, obtains provisional type certificate by DNV GL

June 18, 2020
  • GE Renewable Energy on track to obtain the full type certificate in the coming months
  • Haliade-X technology has already been selected as the preferred wind turbine for 4.8 GW of projects in the US and the UK, enough to power more than five million households

Paris, June 18th 2020 - GE Renewable Energy announced today that its Haliade-X 12 MW prototype, the world’s most powerful wind turbine operating to date, has received a provisional type certificate§ from DNV-GL, the world’s largest independent certification body.
