この「地域に役立つ発明家になろうプロジェクト！」は、発明家トーマス・エジソンを創始者の一人に持つGEと東京ボランティア・市民活動センターが共同で実施しており、今年で6年目を迎えます。
この試みは、小・中学校における「総合的な学習の時間」への取り組みをきっかけとして生まれたGE社員によるボランティア活動の一つで、まず、班ごとに分かれた生徒たちが学校周辺を散策し、町の人達への聞き込みなどを通して地域社会の課題を探し出します。その後、各自が気づいた課題を班ごとに検討し、それを解決する"発明"を考え出します。そして、生み出した"発明"について、生徒自ら発表し、発明名やコンセプトについての説明を行います。
