But with any mechanical Titan with a view of changing the game for the oil and gas industry in Malaysia, maintenance will be required.
The face of change

PETRONAS has just proven that it is possible to turn an entire on-shore plant into a single floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility. The new PETRONAS Floating LNG Satu facility will allow more efficient extraction from far more remote fields. Areas hundreds of kilometres out to sea that previously would not have been viable are now open to the oil and gas giant.
A complex creature

The impressive gas turbines to power this FLNG facility were developed as a collaboration between GE Maritime and Aviation and Hyundai Heavy Industries, delivering an engine 60% lighter than conventional engines.
This leviathan construct will require the power to succeed, and the reliability to continue to operate in varying conditions. Thanks to the gas turbine-based Combined Gas Turbine Electric and Steam System (COGES 2.0), we can ensure it has just that.
These highly efficient and eco-friendly operation units will ensure low costs and maximum power for Petronas’ ambitious project. In order to do that, the turbines will of course need to be kept in the best functioning order.
Expertise at hand

Whether it is a turbine, motor, compressor or generator, having the right people to maintain and troubleshoot is integral to the smooth running of the facility. With floating LNG processing and liquefaction facility still in its infancy in Malaysia, getting the right help when it is needed can be a tricky business.
To this end, Petronas has engaged SapuraKencana and GE Oil & Gas Repair Network to spearhead the first Malaysia-based repair and service centre for the facility. It is the first contract of its kind for long-term maintenance work on an FLNG facility. Given the enthusiasm for this kind of FLNG project around the globe, it’s likely that Petronas, SapuraKencana and GE are together leading the charge into an exciting new field.
Efficient use of resources

It has been a challenging year thus far for the oil and gas industry after an equally tumultuous 2015 and practicing efficient use of resources is top of mind. Although the technology is state of the art, the set-up is cost effective. Key to this cost-effective delivery is a Malaysia-based repair and maintenance centre that is one of the most competitive GE Oil and Gas centres in the world. The success of projects such as FLNG are certain to ensure the centre remains a global leader far into the future.
Nurturing local talent

The Malaysian-based centre hopes to nurture local talent to become future experts and leaders in FLNG solutions. Ensuring the continued success of these vital locations means building local skills for the future. GE is committed to the long-term sustainability of industry within Malaysia.
