August 03, 2016
The Olympic Games is a once-in-four-years thrill for most fans, with instant experts on all manner of sports commentating from couches around the globe.
Behind the scenes of what the world is viewing on screens is a busy hive of athlete support, including the Polyclinic. This medical-care hub in the Olympic Village is kitted out with leading-edge medical equipment, including ultrasound machines, digital X-rays and MRI scanners. The Polyclinic is key to one of the International Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Commission’s fundamental principles: protection of the health of athletes.

Dr Richard Budgett, the International Olympic Committee's Medical and Scientific Director

Dr Richard Budgett, who oversees the Polyclinic’s operations, gave GE Reports a glimpse behind the scenes:

Dr Richard Budgett started his Olympic journey with a rowing gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984, has since been involved with various British Olympic teams and was the IOC’s Chief Medical Officer for London 2012. Since October 2012, he has been Medical and Scientific Director of the IOC.
