Powering the Lucky Country

February 25, 2014
This morning GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt announced that GE will double its ecomagination commitments, investing $20B in clean energy R&D by 2020.
Since its launch in 2005, ecomagination products have generated more than $130 billion in revenue, reduced GE’s GHG emissions by 34 per cent and freshwater use by 47 per cent.

This global investment has meant good things for Australians, too.

In 2010, we began a five year R&D partnership with CSIRO, to bring the very best of inventive thinking to a home-grown research institution steeped in accolades. Last year, we leant out energy expertise to CSIRO’s Future Grid Forum, and worked with other industry partners on mapping out the direction our energy future might take.

We have also recognised the energy, passion and commitment that is being made by Aussies and Kiwis. Last year we were blown away by a wave power projectan engine that runs on compressed air, and a water filtration system from a dairy farm

The announcement has inspired the GEreports A&NZ team to celebrate all things energy this week. From the evolution of the lightbulb to how the lights came back on in Christchurch after the tragic 2011 earthquakes, energy has shaped and changed our world. Our business, along with our customers, partners and industries are constantly changing and evolving to meet the ever-changing demand for energy. This week’s Distributed Power announcement is just one example of this.

We can’t predict the future, but we can expect energy to continue to disrupt and create even better ways of doing things. If you can’t wait for the future, take a sneak peak at CSIRO’s 2050 electricity predictions.

We look forward to sharing news and viewpoints about the evolution of energy. If you have a story about energy that you’d like to share, please leave a comment below.
