10 Ways GE Gave Back To ASEAN In 2015

August 24, 2017
With GE employees volunteering over one million hours of community services globally each year, our annual Month of Service in November provides a welcome focal point to GE’s commitment towards giving back to the communities we love.
GE has been operating in ASEAN for over a century, and today has nearly 8,000 employees in over 60 sites throughout the region. The communities around us aren’t simply where we work, they’re where we live. Here’s a look at some of the ways we said thank you, by giving back in 2015.

Building Homes and Hope

Our communities are made special by the people within them, but housing those people is sometimes a challenge in itself. In May, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, 19 eager GE volunteers gave their time to just that cause, spending the day building a brand new home for a family of three in the village of Mauk, Tangerang.

Building Communities

For communities to flourish they need solid, working infrastructure. As one of the world’s leading infrastructure developers, this is an area that GE knows well! Together with Habitat for Humanity, over 100 GE volunteers put hammer to nail and spade to earth at Kampung Garungsang and Kampung Muara, building roads, toilets, drainage and infrastructure while also delivering women’s health education and storytelling for kids.

Growing the Future

Some communities are more vulnerable than others. That’s why in June, 28 GE volunteers visited the Bantargebang landfill, and together with ADRA Indonesia helped build the infrastructure to sustain crops and vegetables alongside an aquaponic pond in order to increase nutrition in the diets of local children.

Building EPIC homes

Some challenges are more epic than others! In 2015, GE volunteers in collaboration with EPIC homes worked tirelessly in service to the community, helping build a home for a family of six at Serendah, Hulu Selangor. “It took a lot of commitment from our employees… we’re proud to be able to deliver the home,” said Taufiq Razak, coordinator of the GE-Epic Build. This helped another community come together, as it was carried out in partnership with our new family at ALSTOM. It also coincided with GE Malaysia’s 40th birthday. Who needs cake when you can build communities!

Cleaning the Waterways

GE aren’t just experts with water at work, they deliver solutions when volunteering too! In December a team of GE volunteers tackled the waters of Singapore to help fight pollution as part of the Global Month of Service. The team’s engineers put their knowhow to work in devising a smart, simple cleaning solution for a local body of water while other volunteers worked tirelessly to clear litter from the Marina Reservoir and Kallang river.

Building Friends and Funds for Children

In December a group of lucky GE volunteers were able to indulge their creative side, engaging underprivileged children in a fun day of crafts and painting with children from Care Corner Family Service Centre.

Helping out children in the local community isn’t new for the GE team in Singapore. This year was also the team’s 10th year participating in the annual Children Charities Association fair. More than 60 GE volunteers turned up to manage stalls and raise money for this very meaningful cause.

The Philippines

A Gift of Fun

Christmas came early for some in the Philippines this year! GE volunteers marked the Month of Service with an exciting day of activities and gift giving for the children of Childhope Asia Philippines, carried out in conjunction with Hands on Manila Foundation Inc.

Planting the Future

At the start of 2015, GE granted $25,000 to the Haribon Foundation to assist with the vital rehabilitation of the Philippine’s forests. This provided a fantastic opportunity for GE volunteers, together with employees of Synchrony Financial, to deliver a more hands-on approach to the environment with tree planting activities to end the year. This not only helps revitalise our communities, but the crucial environment around them.

Expanding Horizons

GE employees Thailand had the opportunity to get in touch with nature, in the second instalment of the ambitious year-long Green Horizon Project, carried out in partnership with Plan Thailand and The Hill Area Development Foundation. This project aims to not only provide health and vocational training for 90 women as well as improve school facilities, but delivers direct practical help in improving water filtration systems that provide water to the villages of Doi Mae Salong.

Delivering to the Disadvantaged

GE volunteers in Vietnam made the best of GE’s Month of Service with a day of giving to the disadvantaged, in a visit to a centre for disadvantaged children in Dong Nai province. The 17 GE volunteers spent time with the 150 children, playing games, helping prepare food as well as delivering essential supplies. Most importantly they brought some cheer in that ever important spirit of giving!
