WISE Kid-Netic Energy Receives Actua and GE Award for Leadership and Innovation

January 27, 2012

Winnipeg, January 18 2012/ WISE Kid-Netic Energy, a Winnipeg-based science and engineering community outreach program offered by the University of Manitoba, has received the 2011 Actua & GE Canada Award for Leadership and Innovation. Kid-Netic Energy is a member of Actua, Canada's leading science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) youth outreach organization. The award recognizes Kid-Netic Energy's excellence in the design and delivery of dynamic, interactive STEM programming reaching more than 29,000 Manitoba youth in 57 communities in 2011.

Kid-Netic Energy is recognized for its superior curriculum and program design which exposes Manitoba youth to the many dynamic STEM studies and careers that are open to them. Through the delivery of classroom workshops and week-long summer camps, youth get to experience what it means to actually be a scientist or an engineer. This award also recognizes Kid-Netic Energy's unique approach to responding to individual community needs as exemplified by their delivery of science programming for youth communities affected by flooding. "A top priority for WISE Kid-Netic Energy is to make our science and engineering programs accessible to ALL Manitoba youth. We work closely with First Nation communities as well as several local Winnipeg Boys and Girls clubs. We also partner with the Helping Hands Immigrant Resource Centre," explains Colleen Flather, Director of Kid-Netic Energy.

"Kid-Netic Energy's work in reaching Aboriginal youth is especially significant," explains Jennifer Flanagan, President and CEO of Actua. "This is part of an overall national strategy to provide locally and culturally relevant STEM programming engaging over 20,000 Aboriginal youth annually across Canada. Kid-Netic Energy has shown the highest growth rate in Aboriginal outreach programming in Canada."

"GE Canada is thrilled to honour WISE Kid-Netic Energy's ongoing commitment and efforts to expand to reach new audiences of youth and is confident that their work is making a significant difference in the lives of youth in Manitoba," says Kim Warburton, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, GE Canada.
