LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- April 30, 2014 -- Certified Kitchen Designer Elizabeth Rishel of Shawnee, Kan., was looking up appliance specs for a client on the GE (NYSE: GE) Appliances website when she stumbled across an announcement about the 2014 Kitchen Display Competition. Her impulse decision to enter the competition paid off. Rishel's entry---"Green with Envy"---took the grand prize. She won $10,000 and a trip to Louisville for the 140th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 3, as a guest of GE Appliances.

Her winning entry featured a distinctive angled placement of the range, a decision that drove the rest of the design. The kitchen also includes a peninsula with nearby wine center, shelving made from reclaimed beams, sleek white quartz countertops, and reclaimed glass tiles, all set against a backdrop of apple green cabinetry. "The key was showcasing the appliances," Rishel said.

Rishel incorporated several stainless steel GE Monogram® appliances:

"I think that having two dishwashers in a kitchen, especially for people who entertain, is becoming critical," Rishel said. "And I thought the wine reserve was kind of fun."

"We found 'Green with Envy' to be simple, elegant and vibrant," said Matt Jones, GE marketing experience and design manager, when he contacted the designer to give her the good news. "The judges felt that the mix of the clean, contemporary kitchen with our professional appliances was a home run. It really showcases where we want Monogram to play in the market."

Rishel owns Orion Design, Inc. in Kansas City, Mo., and her company focuses on residential work, primarily kitchens and baths. Her winning kitchen design will be built at GE Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky., at the company's Global Customer Center. "It's pretty cool to win a GE competition," she said.

Second-place winner, Kate Roos of Casa Verde Design, Minneapolis, Minn., will receive a check for $5,000, and third-place winner, Jennifer Baustert of Apollo, Pa., will receive $2,500.

The competition was open to kitchen designers, interior designers, students and consultants. Entries were judged by a panel of kitchen designers, industry professionals and GE representatives.
