Transportation Security Administration to Test GE Explosives Detectors in Final Stage of Commuter Rail Pilot; Mobile Screening Car to Check Passenger Baggage for Explosives

July 15, 2004

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 2004--GE Infrastructure, Security, a unit of General Electric Company, announced that the United States Transportation Security Administration will utilize GE's Itemiser explosives trace detector for the third and final phase of its Transit and Rail Inspection Pilot (TRIP) program for screening railway passenger baggage for explosives.
Phase III of the TRIP program will focus on screening railway passenger baggage on Shore Line East (SLE) commuter rail service en route between New London and New Haven, Connecticut. The mobile screening operation will utilize three of GE's Itemiser desktop explosives trace detectors. The trial is expected to yield important data about effectiveness of the screening equipment, as well as the impact on commuter rail operations.
Ken Boyda, president of GE Infrastructure, Security, said, "As a leading supplier of cutting-edge security technology to government and industry, we are honored to participate in the TSA's effort to help protect the traveling public by enhancing rail security."
In May 2004, GE participated in TSA's Phase I of the TRIP program, a month-long evaluation that consisted of the non-intrusive screening of passengers with GE's EntryScan3 walk-though explosives detection portal at the Amtrak/MARC rail station at New Carrollton, Maryland.
