- Sakhalin Energy Company Picks Proven Technology for Plant Expansion
- Project Meets Region's Needs, Supports Modernization of Russia's Energy Infrastructure
MOSCOW, RUSSIA---December 13, 2011---GE's (NYSE: GE) LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine technology has been selected for a power plant expansion that will help the local power system to meet the growing electricity and heating needs of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Sakhalin Island in eastern Russia. GE will supply three LM6000-PF Sprint aeroderivative gas turbines, each with an output of 46 megawatts, to Sakhalin Energy Company, a leading oil and gas energy source for the Asia-Pacific region.
These new GE turbines will help avoid energy shortages and meet the growth demands of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a city of about 174,000 people and the administrative center of the Sakhalin region. The gas turbines, scheduled for delivery in March 2012, will support the new Block 4 of the TEC-1 power station expected to begin commercial operation in the first quarter of 2013. In addition to addressing the region's power shortage, the project also supports the Russian government's initiative to modernize the country's energy infrastructure.
"It was critical to have a trusted technology supplier for this very important project, and GE's ability to supply proven technology for power plants is well known in Russia," said Nikolay Kran, general director of SK Energostroy, the general contractor company for this project.
GE's LM6000-PF Sprint aeroderivative gas turbine operates at high efficiency, features superior fuel consumption and flexibility and enables lower emissions and water usage compared to other units in its class. The technology is approved under ecomagination, GE's commitment to develop customer-focused solutions with lower environmental impacts.
"Having a reliable supply of power is critical to the future economic growth of this region and to the quality of life of its citizens," said Alexander Podolyanko, general director of the Sakhalin Energy Company, one of the largest energy companies in Sakhalin and the owner of the new Block 4 at TEC-1 power station.
The LM6000 offers reliability of greater than 99 percent and availability of more than 97 percent, along with a high level of operating flexibility and proven dry low nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions technology that guarantees NOx emissions as low as 50 mg/nm3. The machine's high efficiency enables lower fuel consumption per unit of power output than competitive technologies, yielding fuel cost savings and carbon dioxide reductions for turbine operators.
