Snam Rete Gas Selects GE Equipment For Expansion Of Pipeline Station In Italy

March 18, 2004

FLORENCE, ITALY (March 18, 2004) --- GE Energy has received a turnkey contract from Snam Rete Gas of Milan to supply two turbo compressor units for the expansion of a gas pipeline station at Messina, Sicily.
The Messina station is part of the Trans-Mediterranean Pipeline System, which transports natural gas from Algeria through Tunisia to northern Italy. Snam Rete Gas, a ENI Group company, owns and operates Italy's national gas pipeline system.
Each of the two turbo compressor units to be supplied by GE Energy will include a GE PGT25+ gas turbine equipped with a dry low emissions system, and a GE PCL 802/30 centrifugal compressor. The PGT25+, which consists of a GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas generator coupled with a 6,100 rpm power turbine, has been developed for 30-megawatt-class ISO shaft power service and offers the highest thermal efficiency in this power range.
The PGT25+ power turbines and the centrifugal compressors will be built at GE facilities in Florence, Italy, while the LM2500+ aeroderivative gas generators will be manufactured by GE in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"GE has enjoyed a long relationship with Snam Rete Gas, as we have furnished much of the company's pipeline turbo compressor fleet," said Claudi Santiago, president of GE Energy's oil and gas operations. "However, this project is particularly significant because Messina will be the first Snam Rete Gas station equipped with our PGT25+ gas turbine drivers."
Snam Rete Gas (www.snamretegas.it) operates in gas transmission and re-gasification through its nationwide pipeline network of approximately 30,000 kilometers.
GE Energy's oil and gas operations are based in Florence, the home of Nuovo Pignone, a long-time global leader in gas compression and turbo generation products. GE acquired Nuovo Pignone in 1994 and since then has continued to expand its oil and gas platform by acquiring or developing partnerships with other technology and experience leaders in the industry.
