Second KFUPM Technology Forum Highlights Public Private Collaborations as Key to Building Saudi Knowledge Economy

Five GE experts to share insights on technology development and knowledge transfer

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; May 15, 2012: In an active response to the Kingdom's pursuit of a knowledge economy, GE (NYSE: GE) is spotlighting critical paths to accelerate the transfer of advanced technology and enhance university-industry collaborations at the second King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) Technology Forum, which will be held on May 15and 16, 2012.

Reflecting GE's growing commitment to Saudi Arabia, the company is supporting the KFUPM Forum as its platinum sponsor. GE experts will discuss the role that local technology development and knowledge transfer can play to support the future development of Saudi Arabia.

"Leading institutions such as KFUPM play a critical role in in collaborating with the private sector to strengthen the overall technology capabilities of the Kingdom," said Hisham Bakhali, CEO, GE Energy in Saudi Arabia. "Working closely with premier institutions, such as KFUPM, to promote local research and development has always been a priority to GE. The GE Fuel Research Center, developed in partnership with KFUPM to further alternative fuel research, is a case in point."

He added: "Our active participation in the Forum underlines our commitment to nurture Saudi talent with the skills needed to support the Kingdoms' needs in all sectors especially education, energy and healthcare. This is a fundamental component of the Dammam-based SAR 1 billion GE Energy Manufacturing Technology Center, which was inaugurated last year, and which houses an advanced energy training facility."

GE is expanding its energy presence in the Kingdom through knowledge-sharing initiatives and increased investments for technology centers that provide service repair support and customer training in the power, water and oil and gas sectors. Over the years, GE has also focused on growing the talent pool through educational programs such as the GE-Joint Technical Program with the Technical & Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC). Last year, GE inaugurated its newest technology center in Dammam, the GE Energy Manufacturing Technology Center. The SAR 1 billion facility consists of three main components---an advanced service technology center, a training center offering the latest in technical and managerial training as well as a high technology manufacturing hub for energy equipment dedicated to the entire energy value chain. Today, GE supports the generation of half the Kingdom's electricity with over 500 GE turbines installed at various sites around Saudi Arabia.
